Welcome to the Cuevas lab

Welcome to the Cuevas Lab at the University of Texas at Austin, School of Nursing!

We are interested how experiences of cognitive problems interact with chronic illnesses, specifically type 2 diabetes, and how this interaction contributes to self-management and health. One particular focus is an exploration of how cognitive changes and health are described by people with type 2 diabetes in the Latinx community. We hope to use this information to improve well-being at home, in clinics, and in communities. In other words, in the Cuevas Lab, we aim to do work that makes a difference in people’s lives.

The Cuevas Lab is directed by Dr. Heather Cuevas, Assistant Professor of Nursing at UT Austin. In the Cuevas Lab, our goals are to:

  • Nurture and challenge students and trainees.
  • Be respectful, engaging, and meaningful for participants.
  • Advance nursing science through a broad research program in diabetes self-management, cognitive function, and Latinx health.
